Chapter 3 — A Life Changing Lottery

Questions to Discuss or Think About

1. Why was Eli so thrilled to be chosen to perform the incense sacrifice in the temple?

2. Every day for years and years, the incense ceremony was performed in the Holy Place. It was never performed by the same priest twice. Why do you think there were so many hundreds of priests? How did someone become a priest? (There is a clue in Chapter 1.)

Activities

1. Find out more about what the temple looked like and what the priests did in the temple. Check Rose Guide to the Temple, The Kregel Pictorial Guide to the Temple, and/or any other books you can find. See what you can find on the internet.

2. The Priests did four different lotteries, including the one to choose the priest to do the Incense Sacrifice.
They stood in a circle, and one priest removed his turban. The priests were not permitted to count people. Instead each priest held fingers up on one hand. A number was chosen, and the priests began counting clockwise next to the priest
without the hat. The count landed on the priest chosen for the incense. The priest on his right was his
 assistant.
Try the lottery yourselves. Stand in a circle and perform a lottery like the priests did, using the description above.
